"...we piece together a mosaic of reading experiences for the adult reader and potraits of classrooms in which explicit comprehension instruction has been successful: classrooms that provide intimate places for children to read, places where books line the walls, where teachers continue to learn about reading for themselves and their children, and where children are learning to be skillful and thoughtful readers." I'm excited that so many of you have shown an interest in working together as we explore Mosaic of Thought. I am by no means no more an expert than any of you. My experiences teaching reading in K and 1st have been blessed through use of well stocked book rooms. River Road has the beginnings of one - Blanchard has nothing. It doesn't matter where your school is placed, children need a print rich environment to become good readers. So how do we do this? As I was reading the other night, I noted that Ellin Keene didn't mention pulling books from a book room. Her observations, ideas, suggestions are not dependent on having 5,000 books available to put in individual book bags. My hope is that as we consider how we can be effective reading teachers, we can find ways to overcome our limited resources. I can't wait to hear from all of you!
